At WISS we value and respect all students equally and aim to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to engage in the curriculum.

The Western International School of Shanghai offers any WISS student academic support who needs. The counseling department provides a safe environment to help students set their academic goals to excel and grow. The goal of academic support is to remove barriers to learning to encourage each student to meet their potential. Academic support is generally in the areas of Math, Literacy, organizational skills, time management, and academic skills such as listening/writing. Additionally, equality of access to the curriculum for all students, including those who learn English as an Additional Language (EAL), is ensured by both direct language support from specialist teachers and a whole school approach in the daily classroom.

Academic Support

Early Years

Early Years is a play-based curriculum so academic support has a different focus, student’s academic assistance would be in the areas of either language and communication or sensory and motor development.

Language and Communication: As one of the major developmental tasks in early childhood, learning to communicate is key for children to interact with the persons in their world and to have their needs met. Communication development for young children includes gaining the skills to understand and to express thoughts, feelings, and information.

Sensory and Motor Development: Sensory and Motor development plays an important role in learning- young children typically use motor skills to explore the environment, engage in social interactions, engage in physical activities, and develop basic academic skills, such as handwriting.

In Primary, support services may range from push-in individual support to pull-out small group instruction. The type of support is determined on a case-by-case basis, customized for the student. The LSS teacher works closely with both students and teachers to help that student succeed in their everyday classroom.

WISS is committed to helping students reach their academic potential. To this end, the community is guided by the belief that effective support for learning must be based on an inclusive and collaborative approach. This perspective requires different strategies for learning, needs a range of different teaching approaches and experiences, and acquire, assimilate, and communicate information at different rates.
